Shore talent on display at Elite Camp

Penn State commit Manny Bowen of Barnegat is named MVP of Chris Melvin’s one day Elite Camp

TOMS RIVER, NJ – High school football is months away, but the hard work is already underway for the 2014 season.  A number of Shore teams participated in the four day Shore’s Best Football Camp at Riverwood Park in Toms River.  Saturday found the campers merged with Chris Melvin’s one day elite camp, attracting rising juniors and seniors with the hopes of getting on the recruiting radar or picking up additional offers.  Headlining the list of college coaches in attendance were FBS Buffalo and FCS staffers from Monmouth, Wagner and Rhode Island as well as in-state schools Farleigh Dickinson, Kean, College of New Jersey and Kean.

“Prime example, you had a kid like Darryl Gamble from Monmouth Regional – he’s 6’2, 190 pounds, he came into this camp without an offer,” Melvin said.  “Not too many people knew about him, I didn’t know too much about him, I heard about him from his coach.  He came out here and showed what he can do, he just got an offer from Wagner. So that’s tell’s you what this camp is about.”

Among the teams participating in groups were Keansburg, Monmouth Regional, Barnegat, Monsignor Donovan, Marlboro and Jackson Memorial.  Manny Bowen, the Barnegat linebacker who committed to James Franklin and Penn State last week, was named the MVP of the Elite Camp.
