CBA duo chooses UNC over MLB

Brandon Martorano and Luca Dalatri were both Day three selections in the MLB Amateur Draft, but are ready to begin their college baseball careers at the University of North Carolina

The CBA duo of catcher Brandon Martorano and pitcher Luca Dalatri had the thrill of hearing their names called in the MLB Amateur Draft, and it appears that they’ll be a part of the 2019 MLB Draft as well.  Martorano was selected in the 30th round by the Arizona Diamondbacks while Dalatri was a 40th round pick by the Colorado Rockies.  The maximum signing bonus for a Day 3 selection is $100,000 unless a team has extra bonus pool money from their first 10 rounds.  Martorano confirmed via his Twitter that he’s choosing to not sign a professional contract and begin his college career with the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Dalatri told the Asbury Park Press via text message that he is joining his battery mate in Chapel Hill as well.  Martorano told Shore Sports Zone following the Shore Conference championship that he’s set to leave for Chapel Hill on Tuesday and enroll in summer classes if he didn’t choose pro baseball.  Both players can re-enter the MLB Draft in three years.

Martorano hit over .400 with 5 homers for the Colts in his senior season and had 11 bombs during a junior year saw CBA win the Monmouth County, Shore Conference and state championships.

Just one hour after that tweet, Martorano announced his intention to begin his college baseball career with the University of North Carolina.

Dalatri finished his high school career as the all-time wins leader in the Shore Conference with a 35-2 record.  He won his last 30 starts and his strikeout to walk ratio in 2016 was a mind boggling 118 to 4.
